Welcome to Earth (Science, that is!)
Welcome to Mr. Reinhart's Earth Science class. This class is designed to allow you to learn about the planet you live on, while also preparing you for advanced science classes here at Inderkum High School. GO TIGERS!!! You will learn about scientific methodologies and begin your study of Earth science in the first part of the course. The reason for this is that you need these skills to be successful in the biology, chemistry, and physics classes that you will need in the next few years if you are to attend college. The rest of the year will be geared toward obtaining a better understanding of the world you live on. We will be investigating current events from a scientific perspective. For example, we will learn about pollution, atmospheric structure, the destruction of the ozone layer, potential global warming, the greenhouse effect, and many other topics as we study the atmosphere that we breathe. Besides the atmosphere, we will learn about space exploration, the size and structure of the universe, and why it is important to learn about our neighbors in the solar system. In addition, topics include earthquakes, weather, severe storms, the structure of the Earth, and many other areas of interest.
We will use current events to introduce units and obtain information regarding your preconceptions about certain issues, research these issues, and create presentations that will demonstrate your comprehension of these issues. All of these issues will be connected to the California Earth Science standards which may be found in the helpful websites section of this webpage. It is my hope that you learn about the Earth, improve your mathematics skills, and practice your reading and writing skills. All written assignments will be expected to adhere to the English standards for grade 9. We will follow the style that you will be using in your English classes to further develop and enhance these skills. You will come to see that this class is more than a science class: it is also math, English, social studies, and many others. I hope you enjoy it.
